    1. The article sounds conspiratorial to me. For it to accuse AI of having the mindset of Suzanne Nossel is mischievous at best. Prominent and rank-and-file AI members strongly protested her appointment and forced her resignation. That showed the self-correcting democratic resilience of AI. As for the NYTimes ad, maybe the reason is exactly what the three advocates behind it say it is. Maybe there’s nothing secretive or conspiratorial or bizarre behind the move at all.

It’s spread beyond the students and youth, now: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/turkey/10101085/Striking-workers-join-Turkey-protest.html

When Erdogan declares that the protesters are “extremists” and “few” and are in league with “terrorism” then you know he’s lost the plot — he’s cut himself off from reality and sealed his political demise. This is not part of an “Arab Spring” — Turks are not Arabs for starters — but it is a genuinely democratic movement: sparked by a government attempt to privatize and so close down public meeting space. Something many of us in more advanced Capitalist societies have to stop and pause before we begin to understand what the fuss is about.
