There’s an excellent radio series now available online (mp3 podcast, live-stream or transcript) that some may find enlightening. At least the first of a two part series is currently available.
Anyone suspecting Iran is something akin to a demonic threat to civilization, whose culture conditions its people to fail to comprehend true democracy, whose leaders are calling for the genocide of Jews, cannot be blamed. That is the message that our trusted democratically elected leaders are soberly, with nothing but their people’s interests at heart, warning us with.
The fact is that a flourishing Iranian democracy was smashed by the Free(-oil) World in 1953. Oil-consuming nations feared democracy in Iran more than the devil himself. Butchering pro-democracy activists over ensuing decades paved the way for Islamic fundamentalists to enter the leadership gap against blood-stained dictatorship. And Blowback has been the story ever since.
Check out RearVision‘s first part, Oil, democracy and a CIA coup (It’s about 20 minutes long.)
(One section I found intriguing in that program — the role of Western agencies in stirring up violent civil chaos to serve the political goals of their political masters. Maybe it was the echoes of that process that I was hearing with the footsteps of Negroponte through El Salvador and Iraq?)
Related information also offered here as a corrective against the dominant message coming out of mainstream media is a copy of the speech by Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad widely mistranslated in the mainstream Western media as a call for the genocide of Israel.
(Note: not suggesting anyone here is a pure white angel — though for my money Mosaddeq in 1951 came close — just doing my bit to make alternative info a bit more widely available, that’s all.)
