Conclusion of the Investigation into the Literary Form of the Gospels.

Now that our investigation of the form has enabled us to reach conclusions about the content of the Gospels, and our determination of their literary origin has established the gradual development of their entire body of material, we can proceed to determine the relationship between the original Gospel and the later development of gospel writing. This will give us a precise understanding of the relationship between the different parties within the Church and allow us to reconstruct the law governing their historical development. In particular, we are now in a position to remove the principal obstacle that recent critical apologetics has placed in the way of a historical understanding.

It concerns the same determination of the Jewish interest within the Church, which we have already established in our critique of the Acts of the Apostles — the same total reversal of an idea, in which those who in recent times have worked alone in this field believe they possess the solution to all questions belonging here.
