So why is Palestine such a threat to the US that they would facilitate this destruction?
I had entertained perhaps a comforting idea that the Biden/Trump genocide of Gaza was a symptom of an empire in decline, and a possible turning point when popular revolt from these images would drive a take through the heart of US fascism.
However, I wonder if we are just watching a footnote in history, the moment the US empire moved on from the facade of soft power and chose to brandish terror as its motivator for compliance. Israel is an imperial outpost, and it must rule its region with fear!
The ethnic cleansing of Gaza is now inevitably. What seemed like a brain-fart just few months ago is quickly becoming the only possible destiny for Gaza. The choice between starvation and ‘voluntary’ emigration is not really being challenged by Europe, except with some puny threats of sanctions that will be too little too late.
The only other possibility is military intervention against Israel. We have seen some serious proposition of this recently, but the logistics and risk are insurmountable. Would Europe really risk taking on the US? There is barely the moral appetite to condemn the genocide, let alone intervene.
A lot is being said about how history will judge us, and I think this view of history as the final arbiters of morality is also misguided.
How has history judged the genocide of Carthage by Rome?
The Roman empire most certainly survived the ‘moral’ crisis and grew more powerful after committing this egregious crime. Even today, history talks about the Punic genocide simply as the 3rd Punic War and Carthage was simply the grinding stone which Rome sharpened its sword against.
Of course, this outcome is not inevitable either. The US could rebel against this horror, but the same institutions that were meant to protect it from becoming an authoritarian oppressive state are now being weaponised against the dissenters.
It does seem utterly pointless to join the protests on the street now, our window of opportunity seems lost. My “Free Palestine” T-shirt sits in my cupboard. Since the murder of the Jewish couple in Washington, I doubt I can ever wear it again. Without hope of peace, I have no desire to be part of a movement that can only now devolve into domestic terrorism. Yes, it is white-privilege speaking here. Yes, they will also come for me some day also, but maybe I can make a better stand when that days comes.
All we can do now is appeal to our government to take in as many Palestinian and Rohingya refugees as possible. If we must be complicit in ethnic cleansing then let us at least end some suffering for some.
Are there votes in supporting the Palestinians?
Are there votes in supporting the Israelis?
The answers to those questions tells you what you need to know. Palestine is not a threat to the US, and is not seen as such. Israel is a threat to US *politicians*, and that’s what counts. Their propaganda machine is second to none and they are able to mobilise strong opposition to anyone with a modicum of power who dares question their genocide, or even mention it in public.
Trump is a bit of a curve ball because he neither understands nor cares about the situation. But he knows that the Democrats are concerned and, as a wise man once said, Trump would shit his own pants if he thought the smell would annoy the Democrats. So he neither really supports nor blocks what is happening. There’s nothing really in it for him either way.
