Dear Neil

Please accept my apologies that it has taken so long for me to get back to you on this. I can now confirm that it will be fine for you to attach a copy of chapter 7 to your blog, as per your request below.

I have attached a photo of Thomas Brodie herewith which I hope will be suitable. If you would like to make contact with the man himself then please let me know and I will pass your email address on to him or ask if he is happy for me to send you his email.

With best wishes

Dear Sheffield Phoenix Press

I would like to know if I can have permission to copy chapter 7 of “Beyond the Quest for the Historical Jesus: Memoir of a Discovery” by Thomas L. Brodie to attach to a blog post.

I have been blogging a series on this book (most recently @ http://vridar.org/2013/07/14/making-of-a-mythicist-act-2-scene-3-that-is-an-important-thesis/ ) and generating some wider interest in it, and would like to post a link to chapter 7 to illustrate the depth and complexity of Brodie’s methods if this is permissible.

One more request. Can you either provide me with a photograph of Thomas Brodie that I might also be able to post on my blog, or ask if Thomas Brodie himself might be able to provide one – or make it possible for me to contact him to ask?

Many thanks,

Neil Godfrey

Dear Professor Tolbert,

I would like to know if I have permission to attach a photograph of
you on a personal blogpost of mine in which I present a sketch outline
of your argument relating to the genre of the Gospel of Mark. I have
in mind either the photo at http://web.archive.org/web/20110707172852/http://www.hrc.org/seminaryscholarship/advisory.asp or the one at http://www.gtu.edu/academics. In the same post I will be using a public domain photograph of Eric Auerbach.

While my blog (https://vridar.org) approaches biblical
studies from a “radical left field” perspective, I can assure you I am
always careful to make it clear that any sources I discuss or cite do
not support my own interpretations where that is the case.

Sincerely,

Neil Godfrey

Hello Professor Davies,

I still recall your refreshing openness to new ideas and insights on Crosstalk back in 1999 when I was beginning to investigate biblical studies as an amateur. In particular, I recall your post (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/crosstalk/message/5438) in which you spoke favourably of Earl Doherty’s attempts to explain evidence from an alternative perspective.

While I am aware you do not agree with all (perhaps much) of what Doherty has written (and I have my own disagreements with him that I have with him) I wonder if you would mind if I posted the bulk of the text of your 1999 Crosstalk message on my blog. I have this past month been doing a few posts on the mythicist model, and in response to much of the flack I have copped as a result, I would like to post your comments — although of course I would make clear the context them of them and that you yourself are not a mythicist, etc.

But understand if you would rather that I do not post your message in such a context.

Thanks
Neil Godfrey

Hi Kenny

I am wondering if you would mind if I copied the section of the Widow of Ephesus tale — the last part of chapter 13 of the Satyricon — on a blog post of mine? I would, of course, give top billing and prominent recognition to your site and source of this copy, plus a link.

If not, no worries. Understand.

Many thanks

Hello friends,

As a former fundamentalist Christian, I am very concerned about Sarah Palin’s religion.  I was asked to write a piece to explain the Assemblies of God Church, since I have the same background.

This kind of religion is not what we need in government – it is dangerous to democracy and to the world.

This “open letter” has been posted on the internet in a number of places, such as DailyKos

and I would appreciate any help you can give to further distribute it.

Thanks so much!

  1. Dear Neil Godfrey:
It has been a pleasure to read several articles on Revelation. I have been a pastor, in the United Methodist Church (USA) for over 63 years. Until a few years ago I was sold on the futurist interpretation of Revelation. I discovered a book by Dr. Christoph Peppler, from Cape Town, South Africa, REVELATION IN THE STARS The Sidereal and Witten Word. There were two other books that has influenced my thinking and research: ON THE GENRE AND
MESSAGE OF REVELATION, Bruce Malina. The other book is SOCIAL-SCIENCE COMMENTARY on the BOOK OF REVELATION, Bruce Malina and John Pilch. While researching the internet, there were well over 100 plus articles on the subject of Revelation written in the sky. This brings me to your articles on the subjects of review and comments on the study of Revelation. I found them very informative and reliable. I hope soon that you will include these articles and other research in a book.

    1. Thank you for the comment, Felton. Yes, Malina’s sociological approach is certainly of interest, and I have noted several interpretations of astronomical/astrological leaning, as well as some very ingenious observations from other perspectives along the way, but I think Witulski’s works have several advantages over all of those: mainly his ability to ground his analysis in archaeological evidence alongside the literary sources.

      1. And in addition he engages with what seems to me like almost every other interpretation that has been advanced since “modern scholarship began”.
